‘Voices from Russia, Witnesses to Change, 1970-2000’
1st Edition published 1st January 2021.
Born, raised and educated in London, I moved to live in what was then the Soviet Union in 1986. This gave me the chance to really ‘get into’ the Russian way of life and understand Russian perspectives. After political events pitched Russians and westerners to opposite ends of a table that had briefly shared in the 1990s, I wanted to try and aid understanding of what brought this about by documenting the depth of the divergences between ‘western’ and Russian mind sets that lay at the basis of this. I thought the best way to do that was to gain people’s trust, talk to them and let them explain, in their words, in open ended interviews, about their lives. I spoke to Russians and ‘foreigners’ alike, who describe how the massive changes that took place during the last two decades of the Soviet Union and the first of ‘New Russia’ impacted their lives. I hope you find what these people said interesting. I was not trying to make a political statement in this book, or form any kind of conclusion, rather provide food for thought.
